I actually fondly remember the story-lines and origins of the characters from the original MK trilogy. That was one of the selling points of the Genesis version, less censored, just toning down the pit stage. Some wording change such as Fatalities being named Finishing Bonus in the end of match screen. The changed the pit stage so no falling into spikes. Yeah, SNES version changed the blood color. Mantour: Cythraul: Mugato: It's still just a fighting game, right? Suddenly, everyone now displayed blood.ĭid Nintendo force MK1 to censure the red blood from uppercuts and replace it with blue-coloured fluid, or else they wouldn't allow it on their platform? Instead, it gave rise to its clones, like Primal Rage and Time Killers. Without the display of blood, it was heading to being a clone of SF2. The characteristic that made MK famous wasn't the background stories but the "graphical display of blood." That got everyone's attention, creating a real moral panic: The evening news even discussed how it crossed the boundaries between fantasy and actual violence. Capcom was the king of one-on-one fights. Marvel got involved and made a spinoff, Capcom vs Marvel. Hell, even a big movie was made about SF2. So were Killer Instinct and Street Fighter 2.

Seriously though, even though the first MK lacked much of a way to tell its story (lack of cut scenes and such, from what I remember), I always thought knowing a bit about the characters made the game more fun. Cythraul: Mugato: It's still just a fighting game, right?
